Story The story happens in the year 1609. Kala Bhairava (Ram Charan Teja) is the protector/cheif guard of Udayghad kingdom. Mitra (Kajal Agarwal) – the heir princess is in love with him. But there is a bad relative of the king who wants to marry her. Sher Khan (Srihari) plans to invade Udayghad. In the process ensued, all of them die. These four people take rebirth after 400 years in the contemporary era. Harsha (Ram Charan Teja) is a race biker. He falls in love with Indu (Kajal Agarwal). And a bad guy called Raghuveer is after her. The rest of the story is all about how they trace themselves back to the past and settle the unfinished business.
Artists Performance
Ram Charan Teja: Ram Charan’s performance in his debut film Chiruta is like a show reel of what he is capable of doing. In this movie, he gets an opportunity to do some real good performance and he performs them convincingly with effortless ease. And he had gone through tremendous physical toil in this film as it involves horse riding, sword fighting, dances and many more. His dance in Bangaru Kodipetta after the completion of Chiranjeevi’s appearance is stunning. He is gifted with a good voice and he should fine tune it further to come up with pristine Telugu diction.
Kajal Agarwal: Kajal Agarwal is the surprise pack of this movie. She never looked so gorgeous and lovely in her earlier movies. She is overwhelming in this movie. Soumya who dubbed her voice came up with fabulous job in the first half where heroine’s naughty and is in love. However, she needs to come up with better dubbing for emotional scenes and serious episodes..
Others: Chiranjeevi did a special appearance in Bangaru Kodi Petta remix song. Srihari has relatively small screen presence. But his role is extremely powerful. He is excellent as Share Khan and his get-up and dialogue delivery is superb. And his Srikakulam dialect in the second half is very nice. The guy who did the role of villain has sharp features and he is adequate. Rao Ramesh is excellent in the role of Aghora. His voice and body language is wonderful. Sameer is good as the deputy of Srihari. Sunil and Brahmanandam are adequate. Mumaith Khan danced with Ram Charan Teja in Bangaru Kodi Petta. Kim Sharma did another item song. One wonders what Saloni is doing in this movie?

Story - screenplay - directon: Story of the movie is about rebirths. Rajamouli opened the movie by revealing the story right in the first episode. The challenge lies in Rajamouli’s handling of telling the story interestingly to the audiences though audiences know what he is going to narrate. Screenplay of the movie is good and the Rajamouli trade mark commercial paybacks are nicely inserted at regular intervals. Rajamouli who made a self-confession in the past that he is weak at narrating love stories makes a nice effort to come up with a convincing love story that penetrates eras and generations.
The following three episodes are visually extraordinary
1. The opening sequence. 2. The shot where hero and heroine go to Bhairava to perform poojas.3. The shot involving of elevating camera on top angle between two pillars in flashback episode.
The following commercial payoffs will work big time
1. White Chunni thread (just like the thread of medal in Yamadonga film) 2. Picking up four important characters from the past and get them closer in the current time. 3. Ending the movie from where it started in the opening episode (usage of same weapons, location, sentiment etc)4. Aghora tells villain how to recognize the hero. And the same symptoms occur during helicopter fight before interval.
The following scenes will create an impact:
1. The horse coming back to help the sinking hero. 2. Kill 100 people episode (inspired by 300 movie killing style where killing is shown more like poetry than a gore element). The opening credits have the counting of 100 as the backdrop and we realise the importance of it only after watching the last fight of the flashback.
The following scenes are mediocre:
1. The basis of heroine misunderstanding hero is too flimsy. 2. Srihari’s car colliding with chopper looks comical in the serious fight of climax. .
Other departments: Rajamouli should be appreciated for giving due credit to all his technicians by dedicating a full-song to them during the end titles of the movie. Watching that was fun. Songs scored by MM Keeravani are little disappointing when you listen to them on the stereo. But they are good on screen with visuals. Background music is excellent. Cinematography by Senthil Kumar is very good. It is extremely difficult to recreate the era of 400 years old and art direction by Ravinder is splendid. Fights composed by Peter Hynes are excellent. Dialogues by Ratnam are good. Styling by Rama Rajamouli is very good and you can see chic colors in the costumes worn by the lead pair in abroad song. Editing is good. Visual effects are nice. So is digital intermediate. But at the same time, there seem to be inconsistency in visuals throughout the movie. Some of the visuals are excellent and some of the visuals are good and some other are mediocre. Visuals are the results of combined effort of cinematographer, art director, visual effects department, DI team and film processing lab. One can see inconsistency in the postproduction of the movie. Production values of Geeta Arts are impressive and it is one of the biggest spent movie of Telugu film industry.
Analysis: Opening episode of the movie is superb. First half of the movie is nice and second half is decent. The tempo goes down right after the flashback episode as it’s everybody’s guess that what follows is a predictable climax. The plus points of the movie are Ram Charan Teja, novel subject of rebirth, flashback episode, grandeur and commercial pay offs. On the flipside, there is tremendous scope for improvement in the second half. On a whole, Magadheera might not be a great film. But it is a good entertainer with nicely packed commercial elements and grandeur. Go and watch it in a theatre near you with nice projection and good sound system.
Tailpiece: There is uncanny resemblance to Arundhati and Magadheera stories. Both these films are about incarnations. Both these movies have aghora episodes. And villain lusts heroine and that forms the central conflict point in both these movies.

3 Idiots
StoryRancho (Amir Khan), Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) are classmates in a premiere engineering college in India. They are from different backgrounds (one ultra rich, one middle class and another poor economic background). Dean Viru (Boman Irani) is a follows a strict regime and believes in putting peer pressure on students. Rancho is of opinion that students should never chase grades, but they should love what they are doing. The rest of the story is all about how Rancho makes a difference to his friends and proves that the dean is wrong.
Actors: Aamir Khan looks like a teenager with young outlook. R Madhavan is good as a student who has his heart set elsewhere. Sharman Joshi is a perfect fit for a guy from poverty-stricken family. Kareena Kapoor’s role is little passive in the movie and she is good. She looks little elder to Aamir Khan. Boman Irani has done a character that has striking similarities to that of his character in Munnabhai MBBS. The guy who did the role of NRI is cool.
Technical departments:
Story - screenplay – direction: The story of this movie has roots in Chetan Bhagat’s first novel ‘Five Point Someone’ – a semi-biographical book set in the backdrop of IIT. Raj Kumar Hirani and Abhijit Joshi have taken the basic gist and a few instances from the book and penned a fresh story. Screenplay of the movie is refreshing with spaced flashback narration. You will have something to look forward to in the entire movie. Direction is excellent. I have read ‘Five Point Someone’ and loved it. The only part in the book I didn’t like is the procedure they go through when the steal the question paper from dean’s office. Thankfully, the director modified it to make it look simple.
The following parts are retained from the book –
1. Three different backgrounds for each of three students. 2. Hero falling in love with dean’s daughter.3. References to death of Dean’s son.4. Poor student trying to commit suicide and breaking his legs
Characterization changes compared to the book
1. Hari (Rancho) character is completely modified. The entire book is written from Hari’s point of view. In the movie, the remaining two characters narrate the story of Rancho (Hari).2. Ryan (Farhan) character is completely changed. Ryan is a man who is into alcohol and grass. Whereas Farhan has a passion for photography in the movie. And his passion is to become a wildlife photographer. But he joined engineering college to satisfy his parents. Alok (Raju) character is kept intact in the movie.3. Professor’s daughter character is cut down.
The refreshing changes in story –
1. The interval episode is excellent.2. Baby delivery episode is amazing.3. The final scene between NRI and Aamir Khan is superb.4. The relationship between heroine and her brand-crazy materialistic beau is developed very well.
Here are the best scenes in the movie –
1. Aamir Khan intro episode where he replies to the ragging senior.2. Aamir Khan asking why astronauts can’t use pencil and Boman Irani replying to it towards the climax.3. The entire sequences of showing Sharman’s family episodes in black & white color.4. The way Madhavan convinces his parents.5. Hindi speech episode by NRI student makes you laugh uncontrollably (thanx to the funny usage of balatkar and sthan).6. The style in which Sharman replies to the questions in the interview7. The methods used by Aamir to make injured Sharman as a normal guy.8. The baby delivery episode9. The climax episode of NRI meeting the scientist.
The director seems to be still having in the hangover of Munnabhai MBBS
1. Boman Irani characterization is similar (he plays professor in both the movies) and hero falls in love with professor’s daughter in both the movies.2. The hospital scenes (baby delivery and sharman’s hospitalization) have similar tone in both the movies.3. If Munnabhai 1 & 2 professed Jaadu Ki jhappi and Gandhigiri, 3 Idiots comes up with another philosophy of ‘all is well’.
Other technical departments: Cinematography CK Muraleedharan is excellent. Music by Shantanu Moitra sound average when you listen and watch the promos, but it sounds very good in the movie because of well-conceived songs and their proper placement. Editing is very good. You don’t find the movie lengthy though the runtime is almost 3 hours. Dialogues are witty as well as thought-provoking.
Analysis: 3 Idiots is a movie that has both entertainment and sentiment mixed in the right proportions. It is also a message oriented film and it gives the message with nice entertainment. All the alumni of engineering colleges will have a nostalgic moment in the movie as we can identify ourselves with one character among there three idiots (for me, it reminded me of my BITS Pilani days). People in the theatre were clapping after the movie is finished and it shows the kind of impact 3 Idiots has it on it’s viewers. On a whole, ‘3 Idiots’ is a wonderful film and I recommend it to everybody.
Tailpiece:
My observation of the works of Chetan Bhagat: I never completed reading any novel in English (except for The Alchemist) till I got my hands on ‘Five Point Someone’. Chetan Bhagat's simple and plain English makes it a pleasant reading for people who are not used to read English fiction. I loved the entire book of Five Point Someone except for the episode that follows after stealing question paper. I also liked ‘One Night at the call centre’. The only thing I didn’t connect with that book is the episode of accident. It took me a while to complete ‘3 mistakes of my life’. I had to forcibly read one chapter a day. I recently bought ‘2 states’ and read the half of the book very interestingly. Book i stopped reading it after completing 75% of it. I am not interested in reading that book anymore. It is hightime for Chetan Bhagat to come up with an interesting book next time as the quality is going down gradually in his

It is hightime for Chetan Bhagat to come up with an interesting book next time as the quality is going down gradually in his
Actors: Aamir Khan looks like a teenager with young outlook.

KATHA
Chitra (Genelia) is a loner and she comes to Araku seeking employment as a teacher in a kids school. Krishna (Arun) is an aspiring director. He comes to Araku to do trail shoot and complete script for his debut film. Local Circle Inspector (Prakash Raj) is a friendly cop. Chitra has an uncomfortable history as she spent a year in a mental asylum. Chitra and Krishna become good friends. While peeping through her binoculars, Chitra notices a murder where she could clearly see the victim girl. She reports it to the police and they find no evidence of murder. With a history at mental problem, Chitra doubts that her past mental condition is catching up again. The rest of the story is all about whether the murder she saw was real or just a hallucination?
Artists Performance
This movie belongs to Genelia and she does well. Tamil boy Arun did the role of male lead in this movie and he is adequate. Sharwanand seems to have dubbed the voice of Arun. Prakash Raj is very good. Shafi is nice though he seems to have gone overboard during latter part of the movie. Raghu Babu is the only actor in this movie who provides popular (routine) comedy. The guys who did the roles of buddies of hero are good.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: The title cards of the movie start with the photo of Alfred Hitchcock (the master of suspense movies). And the story of the movie belongs to the Alfred Hitchcock genre of the movies (closest one being 'Rear Windown'). Heroine who has a history of hallucinations witnesses at a murder. She thinks that it is real and others think that it is a hallucination. The entire story is all about if its real or katha (imagination). Debutant director Srinivas Raga comes up with an interesting story idea, but falters in screenplay department. Direction is adequate. One of the routine concepts we see in all thrillers is that the protagonist stays in a huge house and most of the vital scenes taking place during night time with lights off. Katha film is no exception in taking the routine route. Katha is also a story of ‘who dunnit’. Hence director tries to turn the needle or suspicion towards innocent characters to divert our attention. .
Other departments: Dialogues by Gangaraju Gunnam are excellent. I liked the way heroine innocently asks hero if he failed 10th class after he declared that he is going to direct movies. I also liked the title cards sequence and how it is linked with the character of hero later. Music by SK Balachandran is adequate. Cinematography by Andrew is fine.
Analysis: First half of the movie is quite nice. I loved the way all characters are introduced it the movie and how the entire scheme of the story is set up in the first half. Second half of the movie is a little let-down with slow narration and redundant sequences. Whenever I watch any thriller, I ask myself a basic question. Why can’t the protagonist stay in a small room and mingle with people. Plus points of the movie are Genelia and basic story idea. The negative points are second half and redundant scenes of projecting hallucination. We expect a better and intellectually stimulating movie from the banner of Just Yellow that produced films like Aithe and Anukokunda Oka Roju.

AVATAR
Synopsis:The story happens in 22nd century. Human scientists discover that there is another planet called Pandora which contains rich minerals which are quite valuable. The army takes up the mission on going to Pandora and rob the minerals. But there is a problem. There is a sect of na’vis, a humanoid race are inhabitants of Pandora. They are quite tall with blue skin, golden eyes and a supple tile. There is not enough oxygen over there and human beings can’t survive. The scientists invent a new process (kind of Matrix process) of Avatar which makes select human beings look-alike of na’vis and sends them across to Pandora to get more information so that their military attack would be immaculate. Jake (Sam Worthington) is a marine who lost his legs in a warfare. His identical twin brother was groomed to be an Avatar, but dies. The Colonel promises his legs back (an expensive operation) if he cooperates to be an Avatar. After going to Pandora as an Avatar, Jake realises that the sect of na’vis are kind-hearted people who co-exist with the nature. He falls in love with the local princess Neyitiri (Zoe Saldana). Jake has orders to follow, But, he learns that Colonel is destroying good people for the sake of minerals. He decides to save Pandora from humans. The rest of the story is all about how he achieves it!
It transports you into a dream world:James Cameron adds his tremendous creativity into imaginative 3D and VFX technology and shows us how passion for movies can create path-breaking movies like Avatar. The 3D effect, visual effects and the colors transport you into a new dream world you had never imagined. Avatar is supposed to be an alien movie and aliens are supposed to be unfamiliar (that’s why they are called aliens). The na’vis in this movie are excellent and they are familiar despite of blue skin, golden eyes and long tail. The na’vis bond with various animals and co-exist with them. The Pandora world is pleasant with its colors and is easy on eyes. The night vision of Pandora is a visual feast with pleasing florescence colors. There are floating mountains, flying dragons with butterfly colors, flies that look like jelly-fishes etc. The big tree is amazing.
Story with humanity and lots of moral values:We see the story taking backseat in most of the technical extravaganzas. But Cameron made sure that he gives equal preference to storytelling in Avatar.
This film shows the greed of certain human beings who stop at nothing to achieve money/power. This film also shows the humanity of certain human beings who are willing to sacrifice everything to stop the destruction. Avatar is an eco-friendly movie.
A beautiful love story:Princess of Pandora falling in love with a stranger from another place is an age-old and commercially successful formula. James Cameron has taken the magnificent canvas of the universe to narrate this love story.
It’s a wonderland:I felt like the ‘Alice in wonderland’ while watching this movie. We enter the breathtaking land of aliens and root for them throughout the movie. The background music has Indianness in it. On the whole, Avatar is an entertaining, absorbing, ground-breaking and pleasant (not alien) film. Book your tickets right away and watch Avatar in 3D format. And feel yourself extremely lucky if you got an IMAX theatre in the city you live!!

Amol Atre (Abhishek Bachchan) and Vidya (Vidya Balan) fall in love during their post-graduation time. Vidya becomes pregnant and Amol is not ready for the marriage yet. He suggests her to abort the child. They separate ways and Amol gets busy in politics and becomes an MP. Vidya becomes a gynaecologist. Vidya gives birth to a boy called Auro (Amitab Bachchan). He suffers from a rare disease of Progeria. Though he is a 13 year old boy, he looks like 60 year old man. Amol lost track of Vidya and is under impression that she aborted the kid. The rest of the story is all about what happens when Auro comes to know that Amol is his father.
Actors: Amitab Bachchan: This film belongs to Amitab Bachchan. He is absolutely wonderful as Auro. He did it so well (thanks to amazing prosthetic make-up) that you wouldn’t notice AB at at all on the screen. You would only watch the character Auro. Only in a few instances (eyes during close-ups and postures in long shots) you would notice mannerisms of Big B. Altered voiced of Amitab suited Auro character very well. Amitab proves to be the PAA of all actors with this movie.
Others: Vidya Balan is magnificent as a single mother and it is one of her finest performances till date. The grittiness of a single mother and caring devotion towards her special child is projected well through her character. Abhishek Bachchan is alright as a father of special child and as a noble parliamentarian. Arundhati Naag (wife of Kannada actor Shankar Nag) is compassionate as the ‘bum’. The child actress from Cheeni Kum is cute. Paresh Rawal dons the role of Abhishek’s father and it’s a different character for him. Jaya Bachchan looks little out of place in the title cards of the movie.

Story - screenplay – direction: The get-up of Auro has some resemblance to the hero character in ‘The Benjamin Button’ movie. Director Balki’s approach reminds me of Mani Ratnam’s style in his pre-Amruta years. Mani Ratnam’s Anjali and Geetanjali movies talk about death. But they show the lighter side of it than the morbid part of death. Likewise, Balki also took the brighter side of death and made the movie in light-hearted fashion. At the same time, he didn’t miss out on the feel. One would have moisture in eyes towards the climax of the movie. However, the entire movie runs on predictable screenplay. The thread of slum deviates from the main plot of the movie. Balki is the man from advertising field and he possess enormous amount of creativity which is evident from scenes like
1. White globe explanation2. Bum-blast description3. Poor people storming into the homes of media men4. The one liners written for Auro character
Other technical departments: Background music by Ilayaraja is haunting and adds lot of emotion to the scenes. The songs which are mostly remixed versions of his south Indian songs are very good. Cinematography by PC Sreeram is excellent. Dialogues are witty and nicely written. Editing is little confusing towards the beginning of the movie. Make-up department deserves special appreciation.
Analysis: Paa movie has a simple story with an interesting premise. Paa title becomes relevant because the real-life father-son duo of Bachchans is doing role reversal in the movie. But the title of MAA would have been more apt as per the script. This movie has fair amount of flaws. But what matters in this movie are the performances Amitab Bachchan/Vidya Balan and the emotional quotient towards climax. For me, Balki appears more like wearing the shoes of vintage Mani Ratnam and making his kind of movies. You may watch Paa for Auro character.

Saleem
Satyavati (Ileana) is the daughter of a rich and idealistic landlord/factionist in Rayalaseema. She is brought up in Europe for the past 15 years. She visits her home town after a long gap and she is attacked by the rival factionist. Munna (Vishnu Manchu) comes from nowhere and rescues her. Then he settles in her house as a worker and earns the love and trust of all Satyavati’s family members. He loves Satyavati. But Satyavati’s father wants to marry off to another guy. Just about when the marriage is going to happen, it is revealed that Satyavati has a lover (Venkat) from Europe and she uses Munna to help her escape to Europe. Just when Satyavati goes to Europe, it is revealed that Munna is none but a mafia kingpin from Bangkok called Saleem and Satyavati lover’s brother is none but a dreaded European don called OJo a.k.a. Ogiraja Jogayya (Mohan Babu). The rest of the story is all about how Saleem wins Satyavati over with his one-side love and his encounters with OJo.
Artists Performance
Vishnu Manchu: Vishnu Manchu has toned down his body and looking stylish and lean in his new Avatar. He improved tremendously in all departments compared his earlier movies. He worked really hard in dances and it shows up. He used different Telugu dialects with good effect. And the credit for his looks should go to his wife Veranica who did the wardrobe and styling for Vishnu. Vishnu looks dashing in this movie.
Ileana: It’s no wonder that YVS Chowdary said in audio function that he loves Ileana manasikamga. Ileana is excellent in the film. All fans of Ileana (including me) are bound to have a whale of time watching Ileana on the big screen in Saleem movie. Her perfect figure/physique was aesthetically exploited by YVS Chowdary. I haven’t seen so many close-up shots on midriff area on any other heroine in any other film. There are two songs dedicated to Ileana and the last song (I wanna talk to you) is a treat with Ileana exposing the most of it.
Mohan Babu: Mohan Babu comes up with another fabulous and entertaining performance in Saleem. He did the role of a comedy villain and he is at his best when he says ‘Boom Boom Bhulak’. He excelled while uttering the dialogue – ‘lopala em jarigina, bayata positive talk cheppali’. His song with Kaveri Jha must be the best song in his career. He is wonderful in the song.
Others: Kaveri Jha is dazzling as a lady who makes Mohan Babu a bakra in the movie. Her sexy physique is also tantalizingly exploited by YVS Chowdary. Ali is partly entertaining as a Sangeet consultant. Napoleon is alright as noble father. Venkat fits bill as a lover without substance.

Story - screenplay - direction: Story (prepared by YVS and developed by Gopi Mohan and BVS Ravi) of the movie is perplexed. It has a little of resemblance to the story line of Namaste London. And parts of screenplay is adapted from movies like Ready (Kaveri becoming a character of Mohan Babu’s imaginative story), Wanted (curving bullets), Tashan (Don Anil Kapoor learning English from a sexy teacher), Gudumba Shankar (choreographer for wedding), Arya (one-side love) etc. There is no honesty in story and the love projected in the movie. The screenplay (Gopi Mohan and BVS Ravi) leaves a lot to be desired. Direction is good in parts, but eccentric most of the time. YVS Chowdary seems to have concentrated more on getting a rick look to the movie than the working on the basic act of storytelling. Money should be spent on good story. But stories should not be prepared to spend money. Saleem appears like a story prepared to spend good amount of money to capture Europe and Bangkok.
Other departments: Music by Sandeep Chowta is good. The best songs in the film are Mohan Babu’s song followed by Ileana’s pre-climax song. Dialogues by Chintapally Ramana are clichéd (for example, saying o pani aipoyindi after killing a guy). Cinematography by Ram Prasad is of top class. He captured lush locales of swiss in a beautiful way and he has shown Vishnu and Ileana excellently. Graphics work should have been better (especially the scene in second half where Vishnu is hanged upside down and bangkok flight/runway episode). Editing needs to be crisp (the runtime is almost three hours). Production values by Lakshmi Prasanna Pictures and Big Pictures are superb.
Analysis: Saleem is an example of what happens when the director loses his grip on story and goes on showcasing rich production values. Saleem’s first problem is the perplexed story line (YVS Chowdary, Gopi Mohan and BVS Ravi). The second problem of the film is the screenplay (YVS Chowdary, Gopi Mohan and BVS Ravi). One wonders why Mohan Babu accepted to produce such a feeble and flimsy story by spending 23 crores of budget. First half of the movie is adequate. The interval bang is interesting. Second half is a complete letdown except for Mohan Babu’s comedy and Mohan Babu’s song. There is a bit of vulgarity in the movie (especially jana bethedu dialogues for the stats and intimate parts of the heroine). It’s high time for YVS Chowdary to concentrate more on story and less time on other aspects like concentrating on heroine and big budgets. On a whole, Saleem disappoints.

Arya2
Story Arya is an orphan and Ajay is his friend in an orphanage. A rich couple visit that orphanage and wanted to adapt one of these two guys. Arya and Ajay use a toss to decide their fortunes. Arya wins, but lets Ajay go as he thinks that friendship is all about giving. Ajay grows up as a rich man and Arya grows up as a poor guy. Ajay starts a software company and Arya joins him as an employee. Geeta is the new employee of the company. Both Ajay and Arya fall in love with her. The rest of the story is all about how these two guys try to make Geeta fall for them.
Artists Performance
Allu Arjun: Allu Arjun is perfect as Arya. His character in the movie has the qualities of a psychotic and he portrayed the character flawlessly. He shined in emotional scenes in the second half of the movie. Allu Arjun is probably the best dancer of current era in Tollywood. That is the reason why he made hugely difficult dances appear fluid and effortless in the first four songs of the movie.
Others: Kajal Agarwal is good as a girl who is not committed to any guy at heart. She rendered the image of a typical confused girl about love. Navadeep is nice as a guy with selfish and practical thinking. He is extremely good with histrionics when he delivers dialogues to Allu Arjun at hospital in the climax scene. Shraddha Das is gorgeous in a brief role. Ajay is excellent as Subba Reddy, mainly due to entertaining characterization. Brahmanandam is partly entertaining. Mukesh Rushi is adequate. An actor with better command on Rayalaseema dialect would have done justice to Sayaji Shinde’s role.
Technical departments
Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the movie is about the conflict of love (Geeta) and friendship (Ajay) of a confused guy (Arya) with psychotic tendencies caused due to loneliness in life. Making a movie based on such a characterization is a highly risky proposition and director Sukumar partly succeeds in it. Sukumar is basically an intelligent guy with a flair for parallel thinking. His intelligence and creativity is shown in conceiving certain scenes of the movie like
1. Using a bubble gum to decide who is going to be hero’s best friend (just like throwing stone into empty cup in Arya)2. Hero wearing glasses to see the heroine clearly in his dreaming because heroine appears blurred. (montage shot of 2nd song)3. Love letter episode4. The drinking scene between Arya and Subba Reddy 5. With one dialogue (Aayanaku champentha kopam vunte, naaku chachipoyentha prema vundi), the love angle of entire movie is justified.
Sukumar is also extremely good at penning screenplay for some part of the movie. The best example is the way he distributes three characters in a stand-off of second half (like puli, meka, gaddi story we listen when we were kids).
However, there is a major glitch in Arya 2 compared to Arya movie. In Arya movie, hero is shown as a guy with mischief and he sincerely fights for a girl because he loves her. When he wants to chase a girl with sincerity, audience would love it and follow the hero character with empathy. Hence there is emotional involvement for hero’s character from audiences. In Arya 2, hero would be sincerely chasing the girl to take her and give it to his friend. Hence, there in less involvement from audiences point of view. So, there will not be sympathy for hero when he loses girl and there will not be feeling of triumph (from audiences involvement angle) when hero finally gets the girl. Another major obstacle in the movie is the factor of confusion. The character of hero vacillates between the feelings of selfishness and sacrifice throughout the movie. The director cleared the confusion only towards the climax.
Other departments: Songs of Arya 2 are excellent to listen and I was a bit hesitant about director doing justice to the songs on the screen. Sukumar comes up with a fabulous job of canning all the songs with energy and verve. Background music is also good. Cinematography by Rajasekhar is of top class. Credit for lush visuals should also be given to EFX & Prime Focus (DI) and Pixelloid (VFX). Dialogues are well written. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is good. Production standards by Aditya Arts banner (Aditya Babu and Bhogavally Prasad) are of top-notch.
Analysis: First half is is not gripping due to lack of conflict point. Around 45 minutes of the movie in first half where Arya tries to make Geeta fall for him appears redundant. Second half is better than the first half. The last 15 minutes is clear as the director reveals the real character of Arya, thus relieving us of confusion. The plus points of the movie are creative scenes, Allu Arjun, songs (dances) and technical values. On the flipside, psychotic orientation and confusion in hero’s characterization doesn’t get audiences involved in the movie intently. The runtime of the movie is also high. On a whole, Arya 2 is a different film that can appeal to A centers and class crowds.
